GUELPH CAMPUS MINISTRY

a ministry of the Christian Reformed Church at the University of Guelph

God’s good news penetrates classrooms, student housing and the halls and quads where we walk!
“In a world estranged from God, where happiness and peace are offered in many names and millions face confusing choices, we witness— with respect for followers of other ways—to the only one in whose name salvation is found: Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God reconciles the world to himself. God loves all creation; his compassion knows no bounds.”

From “A Contemporary Testimony: Our World Belongs to God” a document of the Christian Reformed Church

Wonder...

We step into awe and wonder for God’s creation – and experience this as we study.

Lament...

We grieve and lament for things that are twisted and broken by sin – polluted water as well as broken relationships.

Live into God’s Redemption

We know Christ’s redemption. So we watch with hope for what Jesus is doing both among us and through us.

Food, Worship and Fellowship

Hospitality and gratitude are elements GCM emphasizes. Every Wednesday, starting at 5:30 pm, the doors of Raithby House are wide open and everyone is invited to our Community Dinners. There will be a church-cooked feast (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and omnivore options ready to be sampled!) and some great conversations in Room 100. Clean-up is a time of fellowship, and those who are able remain for worship at 7 pm. Other meals and moments for shared worship and fellowship also take place during the regular semesters.

GCM Campus Small Groups

GCM strives to be a space where people come as they are and build on their interests through programs within and outside of GCM. We are delighted with student participation in churches of different denominations, and partner with Christian student clubs and to encourage many different kinds of healthy campus involvement. GCM also organizes student discussion groups: Bible studies, topical discussions and book studies. A faculty group meets regularly at noon on Tuesdays, a grad student group meets weekly for discussion and prayer, and social activities are often organized for Saturdays. Contact the staff for current details.

Reaching Out and Helping Out

Justice and Service intertwine as the students of GCM live out their Christian commitments. Two of the programs with which GCM has strong ties are Agape Café and Run & Read. Run & Read clubs are based on evidence linking physical exercise to learning capacity and retention. They aim to help break the cycle of poverty by increasing literacy rates and providing good role models and mentors for kids. The volunteer commitment is once a week from 3:15-5:30. Contact Willow Road Club Director (and GCM alum) Devin Hogg at willow.run.and.read@gmail.com. Agape Café is a ministry to those living on the streets of Guelph. An adult drop-in centre run through Royal City Church, Agape is always in need of volunteers to serve in the evening hours. Volunteers prepare food, serve meals, help cleaning up and enjoy conversations with those who are there. You can also get involved in Agape’s street outreach.

Newsletters, Programs and Plans

Campus ministries are places of faith formation, worship and gospel proclamation, servant leadership, global mission, and mercy and justice. They are communities where friendships are formed and places where we wrestle with how difficult some friendships can be. We walk beside one another through the challenges of identity and choices, always seeking to be faithful to the Lord. We invite you to look at what some of this means in the stories we share in our regular newsletters.

The GCM Team

Three part-time Campus Ministers, two student interns, six-eight committed board members, and over 60 regularly involved students make up the heart of Guelph Campus Ministry. Half a dozen local congregations from a variety of denominations provide food for student gatherings. We thank the Lord for all these people and many more! Alumni and local churches are invaluable support. Contact us if you’re interested in getting involved.

Campus Minister Sara DeMoor

Sara has been with Guelph Campus Ministry since May 2017, and has a deep appreciation for the University of Guelph and its diverse, fascinating students. Prior to joining GCM, Sara was a campus minister at the University of Toronto for 9 years, working with a staff team and ministering primarily with graduate students. Sara enjoys deep conversations with students, extending hospitality at community dinners, collaborating with colleagues on the Multi-Faith Resource Team, and wrestling with big questions. She's always eager to meet for coffee (though she'll drink tea). When not on campus, Sara enjoys growing vegetables, cultivating friendships, and -- while commuting to campus or washing the dishes--listening to and learning from a variety of podcasts. Campus Minister Couple Neil & Virginia Lettinga

The Lettingas joined Guelph Campus Ministry for the 2018-2019 school year. After 20 years in Minnesota as history faculty (Neil) and general studies/art faculty (Virginia) the Lettingas merged their office libraries in 2003 and moved to Prince George to initiate the CR campus ministry at the University of Northern BC. The Lettingas enjoy sharing GMC’s dinners, discussions and faith-building. They have been known to hike hours in the hope of sighting an unusual owl and love books whether electronic or paper. Though they’re happy to sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, both Neil and Virginia often encourage students to join them for a walk around campus for a chat! Support: Prayers, Financial Gifts and More

We very much appreciate the prayers of God’s people! If you would like to know current concerns, please contact the staff. We always invite prayers for those who come with questions, and for students (and staff) to grow in grace in their interactions with others.

GCM is grateful for the local churches (of several different denominations!) who provide finances, board members, and food. This is a wonderful witness to our students and is part of God’s faithfulness. If you would like to become more involved, please contact a staff member.

Financial Contributions are what makes this ministry possible. GCM is grateful for those whose gifts make hospitality easy and our presence at the University of Guelph possible. Donations can be made online at www.canadahelps.org
